Here is a film from one of my old classmates Si (Neil) Ning. He gave me the opportunity to be 1st Assistant Director and even though stress levels were through the roof at some points, the final product really shows how much work went into this.
I hope to work with Neil in the future, I wish him the best luck in the second year.

FD42
So I'm now a week deep in my second year at VFS, taking the Film Production Course. So far everything is good, our first assignment is pretty much what we did for our final assignments in Foundations. Speaking of final projects in Foundations, here are a few from the class of FD42. I'm still waiting for other projects I worked on to be uploaded.

My Final Project.
So after countless all nighters and 10+ hour days sitting in front of a computer trying to figure out after effects I have finished my final project. I wouldn't completely call it it finished as I'm still not completely happy with the result, but you are always your toughest critic.
Seeing I'm going into film next year I decided not to make a film this year and get more experience in after effects by doing a motion comic. I did sit in on all the film classes though and helped out on my classmates films as much as I could.
I wanted to have a personal connection with my project and not lose the drive to finish it, so by getting my brother and his friends to write a rap about my hometown and my roommate to do all the graphic design I had plenty of reasons to keep the project running.
It was both a stressful and enjoyable experience, I learned a lot of valuable lessons from the project. Even though I may not be completely happy with the final result it's a huge improvement from the starting of the year.
I will always push as many limits as I can, even if it's something as small as putting sexual references and male genitals in a final project that most people wouldn't dare to, for fear their project might not be shown at graduation. It might seem stupid or silly to some people but ap music has always been for the younger generation, so I tried to make the video appealing to that audience. At the same time the rap song is not meant to be taken seriously, so I decided to go that direction with the video as well.

Compendium III
I was lucky enough to be given the opportunity to help out on the set of Compendium III- "Steampunk Neverland- Forever." Every few months the Entertainment Business Management program puts together a school wide collaboration that only top students are able to help out on.

This time around was Steampunk Neverland, 5 high-end special FX short films (5 minutes) that will be distrubuted for the iPad. Each film was directed by a different director.

Because I was only in Foundations I was only able to be a production assistant, most of the time I just felt I was in the way as I ran around doing any odd jobs they needed me to do. For the most part I stood around not wanting to intrude and just watched how the set worked and how each director did his job differently. I also met a lot of cool people that I will definitely be keeping in contact with and hopefully working with them in the future.

I was on set for three days including the load in day, the last day I was on set I was part of the art team and did some set decoration, I learned basic aging techniques to make fake metal look old and rusted. What I learned was just the bare bone basics but I have always been interested in art direction and I plan on doing some next year, so I'll take whatever experience I can.

Overall it was a great learning experience and I did learn quite a few things that I never would have learned in Foundations.

Current Projects.
As the end of term 6 is just around the corner so is the stress of finishing our final projects. I have changed up my idea since I last posted about it, it still is a music video for Tantalus Behavior's new song Langford Life but I have changed up the art direction a little bit.
I am now making it a motion comic, inspired by what they do over at Sequence.
The song is not meant to be taken seriously, so the illustrations/animations won't either. My roommate Milan has been working really hard to pump out some great illustrations, and now it's up to me to animate to make it come together. Here's a sneak peak.

I am also helping out a few of my classmates with their projects, I'm lucky enough to be first assistant director on Ryan Chabot's short as well as Neil Ning's. I am Director of Photography on Feryal Khawar's motion graphic piece. I was also first assistant camera on Alan Maldonado's.

Various VFS projects.
first they're sour.
Back in November we shot a commercial for Sour Patch Kid's new online campaign. It was an online competition looking for fan based videos and their slogan was "first they're sour, then they're sweet."
Me and Ryan brainstormed some ideas and came up with a scene where a sour patch kid flushes a toilet on someone in the shower as well as a scene where someone is doing laundry to find the sour patch kid had dumped bleach into the washing machine. We shot both but only had time to finish one.
We didn't really know exactly how to go about filming as we needed some CG work, so we did run into a few problems when it came time to model a 3D generated sour patch kid, Aidin helped us with that.
We also got some time in the recording studio to do our V.O. work for the commercial, normally only sound kids are allowed to use the studio, so we went under the radar on that one.
Overall I was happy with the final product, even though we didn't win. Apparently the company bought 5 videos for $5000 each and may be coming back, so fingers crossed.
