About Me

I made this blog to keep track of my work or things related to my work at VFS. I might also post things that aren't related to film school. Deal with it.

FecalFace.com

When I was in Europe I started appreciating art a bit more as I went to hundreds of art mueseums but after moving to Vancouver my interest in contemporary art has spiked.

I stumbled across fecalface.com and being a fan of street art it went straight into my bookmarks.

I'm not really a big painter but I think if I hadn't chosen film school I would be creating contemporary art. At some point I wouldn't mind stepping into the contemporary art side of things, be it collaborations or creating my own pieces. Never know, could happen. I'm still young.

"We don't normally work with any specific artists really. I'd say we work within a like minded sensibility. A bit hard to describe, but it probably has a lot to do with growing up surrounded by punk rock and skateboarding culture. The artists that gravitate towards us are also the same artists that we lean towards. Artists who might not have consciously decided to become artists... maybe the same way Fecal Face was never a conscious art website with specific defined goals. Some things just happen." -Trippe

Fecal Face is a content-rich, comprehensive, multidisciplinary art and culture website supporting the art scene in San Francisco and beyond since 2000. The site greets between 11,000-13,000 visitors a day, occupying a unique niche online and in the "real world," by chronicling and shaping the contemporary arts scene in the SF Bay Area and beyond. Visitors to Fecal Face find photo rich features including artist interviews, studio visits, blogs by prominent artists and personalities, an hourly updated news section and coverage of current art openings. Additionally the site supports a forum board with over 2000 users, a comprehensive creative jobs database and an events calendar offering some of the more obscure attractions in San Francisco, Los Angelos and New York. It's helped launch the careers of many a creative, and catalyzed a community of artists working in various mediums from around the globe.

Nate Frizzell

I came across a video on an artist by Nate Frizzell, I'm really digging his stuff right now. He deals with a lot of masks in his paintings and ever since reading Macbeth in highschool I've always liked the idea of the mask motif. So yeah, check him out.

My Final Project.

Term 5 is finally here which means pre-production on Final Projects. For mine I've decided to make a motion graphic-like music video for my Brother's rap group- Tantalus Behavior. The whole thing is going to be completely ridiculous and over the top, probably offending over half the parents at graduation but I'm hoping it will look amazing.

My idea is to have still photographs of the rappers faces placed in 3D space in after effects in a fully illustrated environment which my buddy Milan who is a talented graphic designer is going to help me design. Then I will mask out the mouths and eyes and feather in real footage synced to the lyrics.

For the most part these two videos are my inspiration and I will be stealing techniques from both of them.

My Best Friend Doug

My Best Friend Doug from Dustin Shea on Vimeo.

Short film in 13 shots for Cine class. 3minute movie- 12hours on set.

It wasn't bad for a first try, we made a few mistakes but that's how it goes. There are a few things I want to change eventually, at the time we decided to leave out the last scene of her being dragged into the closet but I think we are going to take a shot out from the hallway scene and add in the ending.

Invasion

This was a video Ryan and I did for art and creativity. It was our first time experimenting with a gallery type video that is meant to be looped indefinitely. The quality is a bit a amateurish and the lighting didn't turn out so well as it's hard to light outside.

Our topic was power. We were trying to evoke some empathy for bugs that people kill everyday by personifying them and making the viewer conscious of what they are watching. We also tried to deal with the idea that we like to think insects invade our personal space, but the fact is they were here first and we are invading on them.

Sugar Walk

Sugar Walk from Dustin Shea on Vimeo.

So I helped Ryan with his art and creativity project. We filled his backpack up with 10 kgs of sugar and poked a hole in it. I followed him around for about an hour.

My discovery project.

I've had the idea for awhile now but never had the resources to make it. So when I got the chance to do a self-directed project through discovery class I knew I had to make it. We had limitations of equipment(don't get to use shotgun mics until next term) so the sound quality is a bit low. Other then that It turned out pretty good.

I also had to do a small presentation about the process of creating the video, so I figured I would try and be professional and do an interview style presentation

Messin' around with after effects.

Had to make a short 20second animation for after effects class. Seeing I didn't learn much I had to figure stuff out myself, a bit choppy but it turned out alright for a first attempt.

Triumphant Carrot: The Persistence of Still Life- video response

Triumphant Carrot: The Persistence of Still Life- video response from Dustin Shea on Vimeo.

This was a project Ryan and I did for life drawing class. We had to do a video response for a still life exhibit at the CAG, we decided to make our own installation instead. Took us about 6 hours. We used a hot glue gun and fishing line.

RiP!: A Remix Manifesto

RIP! A Remix Manifesto from Lichtwerker on Vimeo.

In RiP: A remix manifesto, Web activist and filmmaker Brett Gaylor explores issues of copyright in the information age, mashing up the media landscape of the 20th century and shattering the wall between users and producers.

The films central protagonist is Girl Talk, a mash-up musician topping the charts with his sample-based songs. But is Girl Talk a paragon of people power or the Pied Piper of piracy? Creative Commons founder, Lawrence Lessig, Brazils Minister of Culture Gilberto Gil and pop culture critic Cory Doctorow are also along for the ride.

A participatory media experiment, from day one, Brett shares his raw footage at opensourcecinema.org, for anyone to remix. This movie-as-mash-up method allows these remixes to become an integral part of the film. With RiP: A remix manifesto, Gaylor and Girl Talk sound an urgent alarm and draw the lines of battle.

Which side of the ideas war are you on?

Kill the beat.

Even though I don't breakdance regularly anymore I will always have a passion for it. Eventually I do want to start bboying again, but I just can't find the time. My first post on this blog featured Brett Novak, and I would like to do something similar to what he does but instead of skate videos some break dance videos. I found a blog dedicated to bboy videos.

Desolation

Forgotten, desolated but still fascinating, there is something about an abandoned building that is irresistible.

I found a couple sites that are dedicated to posting pictures of abandoned buildings from around the world.

Mark Jenkins

"There is opposition, and risk, but I think that just shows that street art is the sort of frontier where the leading edge really does have to chew through the ice. And it's good for people to remember public space is a battleground, with the government, advertisers and artists all mixing and mashing, and even now the strange cross-pollination taking place as street artists sometimes become brands, and brands camouflaging as street art creating complex hybrids or impersonators. I think it's understanding the strangeness of the playing field where you'll realize that painting street artists, writers, as the bad guys is a shallow view. As for the old bronzes, I really don't see them as part of what's going on in the dialogue unless addressed by a new intervention."

C'est en faisant n'importe quoi qu'on devient n'importe qui

C'est en faisant n'importe quoi qu'on devient n'importe qui is Remi Gaillard's motto. It translates to "It's by doing whatever that you become whoever."

As far as I can remember I have always been a shit disturber, I was born one. I have always been drawn to controversy and pushing the limits. If it's not illegal or offending someone it probably isn't worth it. I am not sure what exactly draws me to it. It could be I despise political correctness and when I see people like Remi taking a stand I find it inspirational. Or it could be as simple as I like getting a rise out of people. Go big or go home.

Brett Novak

After watching one of Brett Novak's videos on YouTube he got me interested in visual effects. I have always been interested in post-production mostly the editing but now I have been considering streaming into visual effects.
